Trailers on HGV checks

Add the trailers your HGVs pull, and drivers can record which one they coupled when they do a walkaround check. The trailer shows on the completed check and the compliance PDF, so your record names the trailer, not just the cab. You can also set each trailer's annual test and service due dates and get reminders before they are due. Here is how to set it up.

On the web

At autodue.co.uk, signed in as an Owner or Manager.

    Open Trailers

    In the main menu open Trailers, or open Checks and click "Trailers" at the top. The entry appears once you have an HGV in your fleet.

    Add your trailers

    Click "Add trailer", enter the trailer number (for example "Trailer 1"), and optionally a label, a type and notes. Save, and it joins your trailer list.

    Set its annual test and service dates

    In the same form, set the trailer's annual test due date (the yearly "trailer MOT") and its next service date. Both are optional and show as status chips on your trailer list and on the Deadlines page, and you get reminders before each one is due.

    Edit or remove

    Use the pencil to edit a trailer or the bin to remove one. Removing it takes it out of the driver's picker; past checks that used it keep it on their record.

    Open Trailers

    Tap the "More" tab, then under "Fleet" tap "Trailers".

    Add your trailers

    Tap "Add trailer", enter the trailer number and any optional details, including the annual test and service due dates, then save. The dates show on your trailer list and in the Deadlines tab.

    Drivers pick one at check time

    When a driver starts a walkaround on an HGV, they are asked "Towing a trailer?". If yes, they pick the trailer they coupled from your list and the coupling and brake-line items stay active. If no, those items are marked N/A automatically.

What gets recorded

When a driver records a trailer, it travels with that check everywhere it appears:

  • On the completed check, next to the vehicle (for example "AB12 CDE + Trailer 1").
  • On the compliance PDF and the shareable roadside verification page.
  • Kept on past checks even if you later remove the trailer from your list.

Frequently asked questions

Owners and Managers. Drivers only pick from the list during a check, they cannot add or change trailers, so your trailer list stays clean and consistent.
No. The question only appears on HGVs, and only once you have added trailers. On a solo run the driver answers "no" and the trailer-only items are marked N/A automatically.
Drivers cannot add one themselves, this keeps the list under your control. Add it on the Trailers page on web or in the app, and it is available to pick straight away.

No, trailers are for HGVs. Vans keep their existing single "Towbar & Trailer" walkaround item.
Yes. Set the annual test (the yearly "trailer MOT") and service due dates on each trailer, and every Owner and Manager with reminders switched on gets email and push reminders before they are due, on the same day offsets as your vehicle reminders (60, 30, 14 and 7 days by default). An overdue date is flagged on your dashboard and attention feed until it is dealt with.
Trailers are not DVLA-registered, so there is no road tax and no data to fetch automatically: you enter the annual test and service dates yourself. Insurance is normally provided by the towing vehicle's policy while the trailer is coupled, so there is no separate insurance date to track.
